North Iceland Knitting Retreat

Discover North Iceland through an intimate eight-day retreat designed for discerning travellers seeking authenticity, tranquillity and exceptional experiences.

Hosted by Icelandic textile designer and guide Ásdís Birgis, this beautifully curated journey goes beyond traditional sightseeing. Explore the heritage of Icelandic wool through carefully selected encounters with local artisans and textile traditions, while enjoying hands-on knitting workshops and personal guidance from Ásdís to create your own Icelandic-inspired project.

Journey through North Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, from historic turf farms and charming coastal villages to volcanic wonders and the vast waters of the North Atlantic. Encounter whales in the fjords, savour carefully selected local cuisine and discover the stories, traditions and folklore that have shaped Icelandic culture.

Wellbeing is woven throughout the experience. Relax in geothermal waters overlooking mountains and fjords, experience the unique contrast of warm geothermal pools and the Arctic Ocean, and enjoy unhurried moments of knitting, nature and reflection.

With a deliberately intimate pace and an emphasis on craftsmanship, personal connection and restorative experiences, this is far more than a knitting tour. It is an opportunity to experience Iceland slowly, authentically and from within.

Knit where history lives

Pick up your needles for a hands-on workshop, then step inside the turf houses of Glaumbær, where generations of Icelandic women spun, knitted and told their stories.

Whales by day, warm waters after

Spot whales in the fjords, then sink into geothermal pools with the Arctic Ocean right at your feet. Hard to say which part you’ll love more.

Knitting in the wild at Mývatn

Steaming vents, lava fields and volcanic craters. Possibly the most dramatic place you’ll ever cast on a stitch

Two friends jump with joy in a stunning Icelandic mountain landscape.

You might arrive alone. You won’t feel that way for long.

Most of our travelers book solo. By the end of day one — usually over shared knitting needles and a welcome dinner — that changes. The women you meet on this trip tend to stay in your life. Small group, shared stitches, real friendships.

Where You’ll Sleep And What You’ll Eat.

Nights are spent in carefully chosen hotels and guesthouses across North Iceland, each selected for its setting, character and warm Icelandic hospitality. Expect private rooms, comfortable beds and quiet evenings, perfect for picking up your knitting again or simply resting by the window. After a day of fjords, whales and geothermal waters, you’ll wake up rested and ready for the next chapter.

We have single and twin room options. If you choose a twin room option we’ll match you with someone from our group.

Breakfast is included every day, along with a welcome dinner on day one, a farewell dinner on your last night, and one special lunch at a local greenhouse. Along the way, your guide will point you to cozy cafés and local restaurants for lunch and other dinners — a relaxed way to sample real Icelandic food at your own pace.

Itinerary

Welcome to Iceland!

Arrive in Iceland and make your way independently to Reykjavík via Flybus. After settling into your hotel and enjoying breakfast or some free time, meet your host, renowned Icelandic textile designer and guide Ásdís Birgis.
Our journey begins with a gentle introduction to Reykjavík and Iceland’s rich knitting heritage. Together we visit the Icelandic Handknitting Association, where shelves filled with authentic Icelandic wool provide the perfect opportunity to choose yarn for the projects you will create during the week.
Following hotel check-in, enjoy time to relax before gathering for a welcome dinner featuring seasonal Icelandic cuisine. This relaxed evening is the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and begin a week of creativity, inspiration and friendship.

Your knittin equipment

Ásdís provides the yarn for your swatches and a doll-size sweater, so just bring your tools. We’ll knit with LéttLopi (Lopi light), Fjallalopi and 2-ply unspun Lopi. Her optional designs use silk/wool Einrum (needles 4), so pack more supplies rather than fewer. The Knitfest programme may call for other needle sizes, so stay tuned.

How to dress for spring in Iceland

Icelandic weather can bring sun, wind and rain all in one afternoon, so layers are your best friend. Start with a base layer, add a warm sweater or fleece, and top it with a waterproof, windproof jacket. Comfortable shoes are enough for our scenic stops (waterproof is a bonus), and a hat and gloves are handy even in summer. A small daypack is perfect for your knitting project, a water bottle and your extra layers, so keep your rain gear within easy reach.

What to pack

Pack for changeable weather, relaxed evenings and a few unforgettable moments in the geothermal water. The list covers the everyday essentials, from comfy clothes and a swimsuit to your phone charger and passport. Bring a few extra pairs of socks, sunscreen and sunglasses (yes, really, the summer sun is strong), and leave room in your bag for souvenirs. Travel light, and you’ll thank yourself later.
