Tour Overview

Iceland’s landscape has been shaped over millions of years by volcanic eruptions and powerful glaciers, creating one of the most dramatic natural environments on Earth. Traveling the famous Iceland Ring Road (Route 1)—a 1,322-kilometer (821-mile) loop around the country—offers a front-row seat to this raw beauty in its most striking winter form. In winter, the Ring Road winds through a world of snow-capped mountains, frozen waterfalls, black sand beaches dusted with snow, vast volcanic plains, and glowing glacier lagoons. The contrast of dark lava, white snow, and blue ice creates a landscape that feels both powerful and otherworldly. Winter highlights include iconic stops such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, the quiet beauty of fjords wrapped in snow, shimmering glacier lagoons, and the chance to explore spectacular natural ice caves formed deep within Iceland’s glaciers. As night falls, we watch the skies for the Northern Lights, dancing above snow-covered peaks under long Arctic nights. Traveling the Ring Road with Viking Women means experiencing Iceland’s winter wilderness as part of a small, women-only group in a supportive and welcoming environment. Whether you join solo or with friends, this journey offers shared adventure, deep connection, and an unforgettable way to experience Iceland at its most wild, serene, and magical.

Next, we visit the Geysir Geothermal Area, home to Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes. From there, we continue to Gullfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s most powerful and iconic waterfalls.

We begin at Seljalandsfoss, where (conditions permitting) you can walk behind the waterfall, followed by Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, famous for its frequent rainbows.
Next, we gear up for a guided glacier hike on Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull located near the Katla volcano. This is one of the best ways to experience Iceland’s glaciers up close.
We also visit Iceland’s black sand beaches, before continuing to Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, a striking 2 km long canyon carved by glacial meltwater.

Today is packed with unforgettable winter experiences.
We take a Super Jeep tour to access spectacular natural ice caves, formed deep inside Iceland’s glaciers. With an expert guide, we explore shimmering blue ice formations that are hundreds of years old.
Later, we visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where massive icebergs float toward the Atlantic Ocean. Just across the road is Diamond Beach, where ice fragments sparkle against black volcanic sand.

North Iceland Highlights: Dettifoss, Lake Mývatn & Akureyri

Today we explore the highlights of North Iceland, starting with Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, fed by the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum from Vatnajökull. The sheer force of the falls makes this one of Iceland’s most impressive natural sights.
We continue to Námaskarð Geothermal Area, where steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and colorful mineral deposits create a striking volcanic landscape. From here, we head to the Lake Mývatn region, known for lava fields and unique geological formations, including Dimmuborgir, famously featured in Game of Thrones.
Before reaching our overnight stop, we visit Goðafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods,” an important historical landmark tied to Iceland’s conversion to Christianity. In the evening, we arrive in Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland, with time to explore the town and enjoy local cuisine.
